The Pileated Woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus) is the largest woodpecker except for the Ivory-Billed. It can be found in large stands of deciduous and mixed forest. It head crest is distinctively red with a black eye stripe.

I have enjoyed roaming the mountains of western North Carolina for over 30 years in search of interesting nature images to capture on 'film'. Beyond NC, photo adventures have led me to several other states and foreign countries.
