Artist's Description
The Chambered Nautilus is the only relative of the octopus-squid family with a true shell for protection. The shell on the outside is a creamy white with brownish stripes; within, it has a lustrous mother-of-pearl finish. The shell is composed of gas-filled chambers which are added on as the animal grows. The animal, a member of the Cephalopods family, lives in the last chambers, allowing the animal to dive vertically to great depths without compression breaking open the beautiful shell. The Nautilus can be classified as the forerunner of our modern submarine. This print I usually paired with its X-ray that is also listed in Mr. Conklin's Gallery.
