Description
The hummingbird moth is an insect that has many of the same mannerisms of the hummingbird, including the ability to hover in flight, and a taste for flower nectar. It is a member of a family of moths called spinx moths, of which there are about 125 separate species in North America. The design on the lower back reminds one of a lobster tail.

Excellent capture and background effect Shirley...in your description you forgot to mention that they are hard to get a picture of because they, like the Hummingbird, hardly land for a second when flowers are around.

Shirely, this is a phenomenal capture! Congratulations and thanks for the detail about the Hummingbird Moth!
Shirley Sirois replied:
Your comment is so much appreciated, Michael. Thank you and did you see Hummingbird Moth 2 which shows the underside? It is next to this image and is so cute....just wish it were more clear.

Took me a while (earlier in my photography "career" to get my camera settings/shutter speed right to catch one of these guys still-winged - so I appreciate all that went into this gorgeous capture! Congratulations - this is a winner in any book! The HM is prolific in our yard - around our butterfly bush, and I love watching them. This photo will be a favorite of mine.
Shirley Sirois replied:
Paula, I appreciate your in-put on this image and am proud that you made it a favorite. These creatures amaze me, too.

Each year I try to get a shot of this creature and I doubt that it will ever happen again. Thank you for your super comments, Randy!
