Formerly known as Bayou Cemetery, (where it is believed that those with leprosy were buried), New Orleans' St. Louis Cemetery No. 3 was created in 1848 on the high stretch of land known as the Esplanade Ridge.

Rich with history and lore, NOLA's above-ground cemeteries have been inspiration for storytellers and authors alike. They have gained a reputation for being haunted by ghosts for many reasons, including grave robbery, unmarked or forgotten burials, natural disasters that disturb resting places, or sometimes even because the deceased was not properly buried at all.
