This beautiful memorial to English scientist, Edmond Halley, was place in Westminster Abbey's grounds in commemoration of the 1986 return of the comet named for Halley. The European spacecraft Giotto--pictured in the memorial, intercepted Halley's Comet on its return, providing unique scientific research data. The memorial notes Halley's life milestones.

Born 1656, in Haggerston, Shoreditch, London, to a successful soapmaker, Halley excelled in math and science. Upon completion of studies at St. Paul's School 17 year old Edmond entered Queen's College, Oxford. Halley's Oxford Residence on New College Lane served as his observatory, making the location from which he predicted the return of the comet that now bears his name. Halley's brilliance as an undergrad drew the attention of Britain's first Royal Astronomer, John Flamsteed, under whose guidance Edmond honed his scientific skills.
