Perranporth in Cornwall is now a family resort with miles of golden sands, attracting surfers, sunbathers and sand yachters but in the 19th century Perranporth was a tin mining village. Droskyn Point, now an eroding cliff, was mined for copper and tin in the early 1800s.
The Millennium sundial is located on the point of the Droskyn mine overlooking Perran Bay. The dial shows 'Cornish times' which are 20 minutes behind GMT. The stones will be aligned so they show the Cornish time rather than Greenwich Mean Time. When the sun is at its highest point, the North pointing gnomon casts a shadow directly North onto the midday stone. In London it would happen approximately 12 minutes earlier.
