Super Moon 2014

August 12th, 2014 - Mill Creek, WA

Last week, the media really did a good job on advertising this upcoming "Super Moon" that was scheduled to happen Sunday evening (August 10th). With that being said, I was ready to go all out to really capture the moon. Apparently, this event wasn't going to happen again for another 20 years. The problem was this: I knew I had a lot of competition. Since I'm from Seattle, I figured everyone would be heading to the classic Kerry Park to photograph the moon with the city-scape. My style is different. I like to shoot as far away from town as possible, and I'm willing to do whatever it takes to get the shot I have in mind (I've even risked my life a couple of times...but we don't need to get to that). Using the "Photographer's Ephemeris" tool, I mapped out an ideal location to shoot from. It was a 3 hour drive with a 4 mile hike. So I departed, set up, and fired away as the moon rose at about 8:16 PM. I used my Canon 70D to shoot a timelapse, and a 5D Mark III, paired with a 400mm lens, for the final image. Was it worth it for the photograph? Maybe. Was it worth it for the experience? Absolutely. I'd rather go out with the pride of saying "I did this to get this shot" than getting a same-old photo from a 20 minute drive. The more you branch out, the more you learn.
