Richard Cheski: A Passion for Photography

BY DAYNA WINTERS ON FEBRUARY 14, 2015

An undeniable love of photography emerges from the work of 47 year-old, Richard Cheski. A gifted photographer/cinematographer, his passion is born of his appreciation for working with color, light, and movement. He favors shooting long exposures, colorful subjects, and panoramic captures versus standard Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLr) images. He shoots residential and commercial architectural photography for real estate, and, currently, he is working on a snowboarding documentary.

Cheski grew up on the scenic island of Oahu, Hawaii, near Waikiki Beach. Now he resides with his wife of two years, Jen, in Orange County, California. When not working as a full-time professional artist, Richard volunteers as a photography instructor at the Boys and Girls Club in southern Orange County: There he finds great reward when students foster their photography interests. Richard offers the word “moment” as a one-word description of his photographs, and of himself: “persistent.”

Richard entered the field of photography at 13. He loves finding the beautiful moment every photographer covets: “There is a true art to creating compelling images that stand out,” Richard said. He believes being a good photographer means being in the right place to capture such a moment. He also believes a creative edge comes with considerable knowledge of photography equipment.

He immerses the audience in realistic imagery by capturing subjects that are rich with color and intense movement. “The one creative technique I like to use is showing movement in my photos. I love motion blurred imagery with strong composition,” he said. He is enthusiastic about natural and liminal imagery; particularly, the sublime state where land and water converge. Richard said, “With photography, I follow my love for the ocean, mountains and light. Traditional definitions of love are sometimes hard to show with the type of images I produce. When all the elements are in place … my images show my love for nature … Water and movement.”

Cheski graduated from the University of Utah, earning a degree in Film, with an emphasis on Cinematography and Photography.

Cheski’s mentors includes photographer Ansel Adams, Chris Noble, James Kay, Ron Dahlquist, and Walter Iooss, but it’s the beauty of nature that drives his interests. His ideal work environment changes with the situation. “It really depends on my mood. Sometimes I need to be alone and in nature. Sometimes I can find inspiration while on a walk with my wife. Sometimes I need to pull the car over and capture an image,” he said.

Richard has dealt with artistic struggles related to getting his work noticed and dealing with creative blocks. However, his strong Web presence, use of social media outlets, and his ability to take a break to look at a scene with new eyes, are methods for conquering the obstacles he faces. The best piece of advice Cheski has received is to stay focused and follow his passion. As far as advice for the budding photographer, Richard suggests, “Take classes from great photographers who share their talent and experiences. Most importantly, never stop taking photos.”

Richard Cheski’s photographs are available on his website. He has a Facebook page and a Twitter handle to connect with fans and other artists.
