How Artists See Color

April 23rd, 2014 - Auckland, E7

Studies show that artists look at colors and objects in a different ways. Instead of focusing on one point, artists eye scans the whole picture a mix of contours and defines color combinations. Artist Ekaterina Chernova shares how the color is seen from artist prospective.

When artist Ekaterina Chernova studied in the art school, tutors often noticed the colors that this aspiring artist used in her paintings. Ekaterina Chernova still prefers bright vivid combinations for her impressionist artworks. “Very bright colors is what is left in my memory after looking at say landscapes which I like to paint. For example a field could be all one green color on a photo, but in my imagination it is a rich assortment of juicy lime, cold bluish greens and olive shades.” - says artist Ekaterina Chernova.

“We produce the work of art, therefore the artist has to concentrate his/her creative force and work with colors just like compositor works with music notes to create a melody. The more artist masters and experiments, the better the finished painting speaks to the viewer” - says artist Ekaterina Chernova. According to Artist Ekaterina Chernova, the painting unlike a photo uses the color not to document what was seen but to transform the impressions received by the artist and express them on canvas with colors. “An old saying states that what cannot be seen with eyes can be seen with the heart. This is how the viewer of painting receives emotions through colors” - says artist Ekaterina Chernova.

Artist Ekaterina Chernova constantly experiments with her colors and likes to bring out the purest of shades. According to the artist, muted color combinations can be as “tasty” as fruity vivid shades, but Ekaterina Chernova is careful when mixing different hues so that her colors don’t get muddy.

Artist Ekaterina Chernova prefers “happy” tones in her paintings and bringing the color to the maximum. “I dont hesitate to make mountains lilac and the sky lemon yellow when I see sunrise on a cold morning. Although I’m constantly watching not to get colors oversaturated so the final artwork doesn’t look toxic”- says artist Ekaterina Chernova.

It can be seen from example of artist Ekaterina Chernova that artists definitely see color in their own way. They put it not only through their eyes but also interpret with emotions and heart.
