Artisans Road Trip Features Neon Artist Tony Curiel

October 1st, 2009 - Spencer, IO

Spencer, IA -- The upcoming Artisans Road Trip (A.R.T.) is an outstanding opportunity for the public to see working artists' studios that are located in Spencer. This coming weekend -- Oct. 2, 3 & 4, 209, nine Spencer artists will be opening their studios to offer a wide variety of new work for viewing and for sale at this annual event.

The Curiel-Reynolds School of Visual Arts (CRVA), located at 216 6th Avenue East (formerly the Reynolds Elementary School), is a great place to start your self-guided tour. Now a teaching facility for glass and jewelry arts, CRVA holds regular classes through the Iowa Lakes Community College's Continuing Education Department. For the Artisan Road Trip the instructors will be doing some special demonstrations on the glass blowing torches. Director Tony Curiel will be on-hand to explain the process of creating neon art and demonstrate a few techniques he uses in his plasma glasswork. Curiel is one of the finest, and most sought-after, neon artist in the area.

Curiel's neon pig has become an Iowa icon and ambassador of goodwill in the rural Iowa Great Lakes area. Visitors to CRVA during the Artisans Road Trip will be able to view first-hand the neon work area where a number of local neon masterpieces have been conceived and created.
