Ely Spivack Revisits The Biggest Wave On Maui

A few times a year, if we're lucky, a huge storm swell arrives from the North Pacific and Gulf of Alaska and produces the towering waves so sought after here in Hawaii! Sunday, January 22, 2023 was one of those all time days. The Eddie Aikau Invitational Surf Competition was being held for the first time in 7 years on the north shore of Oahu, while 100 miles away on Maui, Windsurfers, Kitesurfers, Surfers, Boogie Boarders, and Wingfoilers braved the 30 to 50+ foot waves at one of the greatest waves in the world, Peah'i, or Jaws. Living only a few miles away as the Iwa flies, I raced down to the cliffs, watched in awe at the waves and riders, and took some spectacular photos!

First Big Swell Of The Season Arrives On Maui

Our first big swell of the season arrived here on Maui on October 17th and 18th (2023). I was able to visit from my secret shooting location to take pictures of all of the great surfing action! 20+ foot faces on these waves! And I'll be down there for the next one, too! Hoping for an XXL next time!

Thanksgiving Big Swell At Jaws Peahi On Maui

We just had our second big swell of the season here on Maui, on November 24th. I got down to my secret spot on the cliff, set up all of my camera gear, and shot away! Gallogly Photo Takes Prize In Florida State Contest

My image of sea stacks at Bandon Beach on the Oregon coast recently took second place in a competition state-wide in Florida run by the Florida Camera Club Council (FCCC). The council is a nonprofit founded in 1959 with a membership of 50 camera clubs in the state. It holds three annual digital and print competitions. When an entry wins one of the four top ribbons in any of the three annual competitions, it is entered in the end of year competition. My image took second place in the end of year digital competition in the Monochrome category. Of a total of 891 images entered in the end-of-year digital competition, there were 122 images that had made the cut from the tri-annual competitions to be entered in the Monochrome category in the end of year competition.
