Description
Barronette Peak is one of the prominent mountains on the northeast entrance road of Yellowstone National Park. The peak is located about 7 miles southwest of Cooke City, Montana. Barronette Peak elevation 10,354 feet is a mountain peak in the northeast section of Yellowstone National Park in the Absaroka Range. The wind blown peaks are named for"Yellowstone Jack" Baronett .It was Jack who rescued Truman C. Everts for a promised 600.00 dollars reward; He became lost for 37 days during the 1870 expedition, not only did he not get the money ,but the park misspelled the peak they named after him ! It was named by the Hayden Geological Survey of 1878. When named, the name was misspelled Barronette and it retains the official misspelled name today. The Absarokas are one of the most common places to find mountain goats in Yellowstone. The mountain goats are not native to Yellowstone. These animals were introduced in Montana in the 1940s, and by the 1990s the herds had expanded to Yellowstone and beyond. They are majestic animals, but they compete here for habitat with bighorn sheep. They can been seen easier in the summertime, but still are mistaken for patches of snow !
