Description
close up macro photograph of a lemon yellow "Happy Returns" daylily. Daylilies are perennial plants. Typically, a new flower opens on a flower stalk early in the morning and withers before the next morning to be replaced by a new flower on the same flower stalk, hence the name daylily. Most types of daylilies occur as clumps, each of which has leaves, a crown, flowers, and roots. Daylilies have been cultivated in a variety of colors such as orange, yellow, red, purple and peach, with the most common being the familiar roadside Tawny Daylily with its orange and gold hues and the lemon toned yellow daylilies such as Happy Returns.
Daylilies are not considered to be true lilies and are of the genus Hemerocallis which means beautiful in the Greek langage. They have been bred by horticulturalists for their attractive flowers with more than 60,000 thousand cultivars registered by U.S. and international societies. Day lilies are native to Eurasia, not the United States, but are clearly popular and favorite garden flowers around the world. Their bright and cheerful colors, drought and frost tolerance and ability to thrive in many different climate zones make them a very desirable garden plant. They are often planted in natural areas and make a stunning blanket of color while they are in bloom.
