Description
The wolf is very comfortable in the water, and does not hesitate to wade through icy streams or swim across short stretches of lake. In summer, wolves often bathe in streams to keep cool, and they will readily follow prey into water. The wolf has 2 types of hair, "Guards and "Undercoat". Wolves have bulky thick coats consisting of two layers. Their first layer is made up of tough guard hairs that repel water and dirt. Their second layer is a dense, water-resistant undercoat that insulates the wolf and keeps it warm. Their undercoat is shed in the form of large tufts of fur in late spring or early summer. Females tend to lose their winter coats more slowly than males. The wolf uses its hair to communicate anger, dominance and aggression. Wolves can raise and lower this hair depending on their state of aggression In winter the wolf's thick coat keeps them warm even on the coldest nights, they have practically no body heat loss through their fur(snow will not melt on a wolf's fur)At night the wolf curls up, it covers its nose with its long tail. What this does is hold the warm air exhaled over the feet and nose, warming them. When the wolf inhales the air is filtered through the tail and is warmed by the exhaled air before it is breathed in. The most common coat color is grey flecked with black, with lighter under parts.
