The White Salmon river is born on the glaciers of Mt. Adams about 30 miles to the north of this location. Much of the river most likely flowed underground eons ago, via a lava tube. When the tube crumbled, it left vertical basalt cliffs, some over 100 feet high, along the river. In the winter and early spring seasonal creeks create small waterfalls that flow into the White Salmon. The view of these falls in full force is stunningly beautiful.
