Winter Blues by Karen Cook - the stunning blues and whites of the Blue Jay against the snow covered branches after a snowfall in Nova Scotia. Known for their noisy calls, the perky crest on the top of their heads, they are thought to be an intelligent bird with a tightly knit family circle. They can mimic the sound of other birds, including hawks which could prove useful in making other birds think a hawk was near and thus clearing the way for the greedy Blue Jay to swoop in and empty the bird feeders. They are greedy, loving sunflower seeds and peanuts and empty our birdfeeders daily. But, I love their cheeky calls, bright colors and who can't admire their beauty against the winter snow?
