Description
Wings I
A monarch butterfly rests atop yellow flowers, painted in vibrant warm hues of orange, red, purple, and gold on discarded and upcycled sheet music.
*****
This is my first painting in a series of miniatures featuring Colorado butterflies, painted onto a background of sheet music and presented attached to tiny canvases. I have long wanted to experiment with different ways to approach and present watercolor paintings, and different archival quality materials that can be used for this purpose. Oftentimes, I feel that the matting and glass used in traditional framing processes for watercolors creates distance between the viewer and the work, so I am trying out a different process, here.
*****
I enjoy the appearance of musical notes on a page, and also feel good about repurposing items that might otherwise have found their way to the garbage.
*****
The original painting is 3x3, mounted on a black canvas, with the edges of the paper deckled in a way that allows the black edge to show a bot, framing the painting visually. Please contact the artist directly for photos of the original as presented, and look for more items in this series. These paintings make a particularly beautiful display as a set, and can fit n many places in a home, die to their small size.

According to:
http://www.wildspeak.com/animalenergies/monarchbutterfly.html
The monarch butterfly teaches us that life is short, and that it must be valued. Assuming that we have decades of our lives left (or at the very least, years) is all well and good for things like economic planning, but it is through recognising the fleetingness of human existence that we come to value every day, even those which get us down or which are hard to appreciate.
*****
Monarch butterfly asks you to consciously look at what you have gained that is valuable in each day, and even to write the things that you are grateful for down. If you are in a position where you can think of nothing to be grateful for, monarch butterfly is a guide willing to open your eyes to the beauty and gift of life once more. It is through this that monarch butterfly teaches us how to look for sweetness and light in our lives.
