Description
This is an image of an oil painting from my Australian Native Flora series. As an island continent, Australian nature developed in unique ways, producing some of the most unusual species on earth. The waratah is the state floral emblem of New South wales. The red and green kangaroo paw is the state floral emblem of Western Australia. The flannel flower, like the waratah, is an iconic Blue Mountains and Sydney plant, featuring in many historic artworks and architectural decorations. The gumnuts add an interesting touch, I think, providing a contrasting texture and shape to the soft and fuzzy flannel flowers and kangaroo paws. The 'white' waratah is actually a combination of cream and light green, as I emphasize in my paintings. In my many paintings of waratahs and surrounding Australian native flora, I try to capture a general (but not overly-detailed) botanical accuracy combined with painterly brushstrokes.
