Description
Wayland's Smithy, Oxfordshire, UK. This is a Neolithic long barrow and chamber tomb, which excavations in 1962-63 proved was built in two different time periods. A timber oval barrow was built around 3700 BC and a stone chambered long barrow was built around 3400 BC. Inside the timber chamber, fourteen articulated and disarticulated bodies were discovered and eight skeletons, one of a child, were found in the long barrow during excavations in 1919. Wayland's Smithy was named by Saxon settlers who thought the tomb was the work of one of their Gods, Wayland the Smith.
