Omkareshwar is a Hindu temple complex and pilgrimage in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.
It is located about 100 kilometers south-east of Indore - Madhya Pradesh - India. The temples and holy places are situated on a river island in the Narmada. The island has the shape of the sacred symbol Om.
In the Shiva temple of Shri Omkar Mandhata one situated only twelve Jyotirlingams that there is on the Indian subcontinent. It is essentially the attraction Omkareshwars to pilgrims from all over India. The island of Omkareshwar is accessible from the village over two bridges. On the island there is the palace of the former Maharaja of Omkareshwar. The island is criss-crossed by an approximately seven kilometers long pilgrimage, to wander the Hindu pilgrims, while reciting prayers in honor of Shiva. Also located on the island several Jain and Hindu temples. However, most of these temples are in the 11th Century were destroyed by Muslim invaders.
