Description
The Waco Hippodrome Theatre opened its doors to the public in February of 1914, hosting local shows and vaudeville acts. As the vaudeville era drew to a close the downtown Waco theatre transitioned to the new wave of entertainment...silent movies. Fire destroyed the projection booth and front facade in 1928, resulting in the current Spanish Colonial exterior. Over the years the Waco Theater changed hands, serving as a venue for movies, concerts and stage productions. Elvis Presley took a movie at the Waco Theater while stationed at Fort Hood, and John Wayne promoted one of his movies at the Waco Theater. Today, the restored Waco Hippodrome features first run movies.
