Description
Santorini is, basically, a flooded volcanic caldera, the remains of a massive eruption in about 1600 BC. Since that eruption, repeated eruptions have created the small volcanic island of Nea Kameni, and its smaller neighbour, Palea Kameni. Nea Kameni is a tourtist attraction where visitors can walk around the volcanic crater.
This photo was taken from Nea Kameni, showing the raw "young" volcanic rock in the foreground, with the town of Fira in the background. Fira is situated on the island of Thera, which, like all of the Santorini islands, is part of the rim of the caldera.
