Description
This watercolor and gouache painting is one in a series of highly detailed and botanically accurate works that are the result of many hours spent studying and drawing both wild and cultivated plants.
This particular plant is well known, but what is typically not known is how rare and endangered it has become. Native to a small and diminishing coastal area of North and South Carolina, the Venus Fly Trap has succumbed to habitat destruction and illegal collecting. Fortunately, many plants and cultivars are being grown all over the world by carnivorous plant enthusiasts and businesses who sell the plants. I have been growing, drawing and painting many different species of carnivorous plants since childhood and support the conservation of wetland habitat that these wonderful plants require to survive. For more information about carnivorous plants, visit the International Carnivorous Plant Society website: http://www.carnivorousplants.org/
