Description
Udaipur City Palace Rajasthan India Queens Kitchen. Inside the City Palace in Udaipur, there is a complete suite of rooms that was reserved for the Queen. Of course, her companions and maids would be present there as well. In the Kitchen area of her suite, flanked by an open-air courtyard, I came upon this little open room (more like a cave?) housing the cooking vessels, tools and implements that were used in that old bygone era. I found this spot very interesting.
I was astonished to see that even this little courtyard store-room had a wonderful set of murals on the walls! (The patterns of light on the mural, are actually sunlight streaming through lattice work windows from across the courtyard). These murals or wall paintings, are done in the typical Rajput style of art. They depict various scenes from the life of Lord Krishna, the blue-bodied Hindu God, also known as Vishnu. Many stories about Lord Krishna revolve around his childhood, when he was a naughty and playful boy, as well as endowed with godly gifts and powers. He was fond of playing the musical instrument flute, as well as shepherding, and loved to drink loads of milk and eat dairy products like yogurt and butter! In those old days, the bygone era, butter used to be stored in baked clay ceramic pots. As Krishna loved to eat up all the butter, his mother, Yashoda, used to hang the yogurt and butter pots from the ceiling using ropes. But there was no beating Krishna at his own game! He would climb on top of anything, including a couple of his friends, standing and serving as a human ladder, to get at those pots and drink up the contents while mom was not at home!
The City Palace in Udaipur, is a palace complex in Udaipur, in the Indian State of Rajasthan. Showcasing some spectacular architecture, it was built over a period of nearly 400 years being contributed by several kings of the dynasty, starting by the Maharana Udai Singh II as the capital of the Sisodia Rajput clan in 1559, after he moved from Chittor. It is located on the east bank of the Lake Pichola and has several palaces built within its complex. Udaipur was the historic capital of the former kingdom of Mewar in the Rajputana Agency and its last capital.
The City Palace in Udaipur was built in a flamboyant style and is considered the largest of its type in Rajasthan, a fusion of the Rajasthani and Mughal architectural styles, and was built on a hill top that gives a panoramic view of the city and its surroundings, including several historic monuments such as the Lake Palace in Lake Pichola, the Jag Mandir on another island in the lake, the Jagdish Temple close to the palace, the Monsoon Palace on top of an overlooking hillock nearby and the Neemach Mata temple. These structures are linked to the filming of the James Bond movie Octopussy, starring Roger Moore, which features the Lake Palace and the Monsoon Palace. The subsequent publicity has resulted in the epithet of Udaipur as "Venice of the East".
