Delicate blossoms in vibrant tropical colors take us to a place of moist hot summers, fruity scents and ephemeral beauty that dies and gets reborn each day.

This is a loosely and wetly painted sumi-e or asian style floral in shades of melon, coral, mango, lime, papaya, violet, pink, red, orange, chartreuse, green, and a deep indigo I mixed myself. The flowers and background are painted wet on wet, and the branches giving the composition its solidity are added after the the colorful part dries, for a contrast of colors, values, shapes and edges.

I love the seeming simplicity and freshness of asian inspired art, and feel watercolor is the ideal medium for expressing myself in this way. There is a focused, calm editative quality one achieves when approaching a painting in this way, that is very satisfying and peaceful. I feel those qualities come through in both the process and the finished painting. A light-hearted and beautiful painting can add warmth and vibrancy to your decor, and may be especially appreciated by the women in your life; mother, wife, daughter, girfriendgrandmother, or anybody special who deserves a lovely gift.
