Early morning in the Ngorongoro brings movement of large mammals, such as these elephants, before the heat of the day. These four bulls were strolling through the high green grasses stopping occasionally to graze or stare at us.
Male African elephants are the largest surviving terrestrial animals and can reach a height of 13 feet. Some of the larger, older male elephants can weigh as much as 15,000 pounds.
All elephants have several distinctive features the most notable of which is a long trunk or proboscis for many purposes, particularly breathing, lifting water and grasping objects. Their incisors grow into tusks, which can serve as weapons and as tools for moving objects and digging. Elephants' large ear flaps help to control their body temperature. African elephants have larger ears and concave backs while Asian elephants have smaller ears and convex or level backs. With an exceptional intelligence, strong family bonds and a little understood form of communication makes them a joy to watch. They are thought to be extremely emotional and protective of their young which can make them dangerous when approached too closely.
