Description
"To Serve God Is To Reign" That's the meaning of the Latin quotation carved over the doorway of the Musee de Cluny in Paris. Built in the 15th century over the remains of a Roman bath, this 23-room Gothic mansion originally served as a townhouse for the Benedictine Cluny monks.
In 1843, it was turned into a museum of the middle ages. Today, the many treasures it houses include the six famous Lady and the Unicorn tapestries -- plus sculptures stolen from Notre Dame during the French Revolution and discovered in a bank basement in 1977.
The shells shown in the photo are also religious symbols. Pilgrims taking the sea route home from Santiago de Compostella in northwestern Spain sewed scallop shells like these into their cloaks as mementos of their journey.
