Description
Titanic's boilers in the Harland and Wolff shipyard, Belfast, UK, prior to installation. There were 25 double-ended triple furnace boilers and 4 single-ended triple furnace boilers on board Titanic. This gave a total of 162 furnaces that had to be manually stoked 24 hours a day. The Titanic was the largest ocean liner ever built at the time, and was reputed to be unsinkable. However, during its maiden voyage it struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic on the night of 14 April 1912 and sank with the loss of 1517 lives.
