Anomaly
Love is a strange anomaly;
It is as fragile as a vine,
It is as strong as the strongest tree,
It is human and divine.
O tender plant, I shall not touch
One delicate tendril, one bright spray,
Lest handling you overmuch
I tear your clinging life away.
And O strong, splendid, lovely tree,
So tall you are, so deep your roots,
You quench my thirst, you shelter me,
You feed my hunger with your fruits.
So frail, so strong, so much a part
Of life itself--love waits me there:
A strong tree sheltering my heart,
A vine that needs my tenderest care.
