Description
I chose to illustrate the springtime nesting activity of the Sandhill cranes in this new watercolor painting. It would be a wonderful companion print with "The Blessed Event - Sandhill Cranes" which illustrates a new hatchling along with the second one just breaking out of its' shell.
Sandhill cranes are a common sight in the central Wisconsin region, especially near marshy areas with tall grasses and cattails where their nests are well hidden. They are migratory birds that generally come to this area from southern regions such as Mexico and the Gulf coast.
This pair of cranes chose a nesting sight near the edge of a local pond that is surrounded by cattails and other vegetation. Their food source is very nearby as they generally can be found in the local farm fields, besides the swampy waters.
Sandhills are actually gray overall, but due to their preening with muddy bills, they stain the feathers on their upper back, lower neck and breast area and even their tertial feathers that form a 'bustle' over their rump.
Once you have observed the flight of this stately bird with its' wingspan of over 70 inches and heard its' haunting, trumpeting call, you will never forget it.

Congratulations on being in the top winners spots of our recent contest sponsored by the Wisconsin Flowers and Scenery. Your submissions were excellent and surely qualified for top wins. When your works are voted on by your peers, it is quite an honor to be recognized by fellow artists who admire your art works. Thanks for entering this fun contest, and your winning pieces are displayed on our homepage. This is a special feature which I have only done once before this, but I feel this one of your beauties should have taken first place. I did vote for the top 3, but just, in clear conscience, I had to feature in its own special place, as it is really the best of the best.
