Description
This is a photograph of a portion of the original Route 66 Highway located near Miami, Oklahoma. It was constructed in 1922 of a concrete base with a thin layer of asphalt on the surface. It is only 9 feet wide because so few cars traveled on the road that they would get off onto the gravel shoulder to pass. It is still driveable today. The lines marking the edge of the road are constructed of poured concrete.

You've got some great " keepers" from the past, and love the creative titles ! v
Cheri Randolph replied:
Shasta, Thanks for your nice compliment and the vote as well. It was easy to title this one as this is how the locals refer to "The Route"

It's amazing this piece of history still exists; just imagine all the travels and storied along this stretch of road;) v

Jack, Thanks for visiting my Route 66 Gallery! I was amazed to have discovered this still-existing section of original pavement too, and that it was still driveable today. Thanks for commenting and voting!

Cheri, This is so cool, The Mother Road!! Good for you to see it and photograph it! Love it.. FVG+
Cheri Randolph replied:
Kym, I thought so too. One of the owners of a small local burger restaurant told me about the location - this is how the locals refer to the road, because this is one of the few remaining bits of Route 66 that has never been paved over.

Randy, I'm glad that you enjoyed this one. It is amazing that the road was so small for the important role it had in the beginning of cross-country automobile travel. Thanks for the F/V!

While somewhat derelict in its appearance, you surely can see the original Route 66 on the road. Great capture of this fine historical place, Cheri. Thanks for sharing! fave and vote

Anne, thanks! I guess that you're correct it was probably one of the first "super" highways in the U.S.
