Description
And travellers, now, within that valley,
Through the red-litten windows see
Vast forms that move fantastically
To a discordant melody;
~ Sir Edgar Allan Poe [fr.The Haunted Palace]

There is an English country house in Kent, England called Scotney Castle. The house is a medieval manor house with a 14th century moat on an island on a small lake . This is all surrounded by 770 acres of formal gardens and woods. The gardens have been used for Shakespearean productions; Scotney Castle itself was used in a music video production.
The tower was built in 1377 as a protection against raids from foreign ships. It is connected to the Elizabethan manor house which was built by the Darrell family in the late 16th century. The Darrell family owned the house for over 300 years.
One of the Darrell owners became involved in smuggling activities. A revenue officer was murdered when this was discovered and, while it was never proven, it was believed Arthur Darrell staged his own death after throwing the official's body into the moat, the ghost of which haunts the castle to this day.
