Description
The original of this painting is hanging in the administration building at McConway & Torley in Pittsburgh, along with 10 others of key processes in the production of railroad couplers. The worker depicted, Dave, is a lead grinder with many years experience at the plant. I sketched him working, and took many reference photos, as he tried to keep me from being stung by the sparks. I completed the actual painting in my studio. I love the cool factory light, and the heat of the sparks flying off the grinding wheel. I am proud that those who know Dave can recognize him from this painting, even with all of his protective layers.

Thank you for your comments, everyone. The commissioned series I did for McConway and Torley meant a lot to me. I insisted on depicting each worker as an individual, not a generic entity. The supervisors pointed out the very best grinder, and I worked with him to get this picture of him in action. He was trying not to hit me with the sparks. I really didn't care, as I used to work in factories myself and was familiar with the sting.
