Description
Cormorants are very prevalent all around the coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Expert fishermen, they spend most of the day out on the ocean, diving for fish. When evening comes, they come ashore to roost for the night, though not usually on an old sawed-off tree stump. I think this one was contemplating one last foray before the rather stormy night fell. I shone a small flashlight on the stump to get a bit of illumination without scaring him away, they can be very wary if you get too close. In the background are the Olympic Mountains in Washington State across the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

A little about me:
I'm Canadian, born and raised in Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, with a long career in radar, communications, and computers.Retired at 74. Scion of a Grand Banks schooner captain and a merchant mariner,I love the ocean. I started using 35mm.color in 1950.Favourite camera was an Exakta Varex.Switched to digital around 1998. My favourite themes are the sea, oceans, coastal, villages, water, lakes, mountains, wildlife, sky, clouds, flowers, forests, the National Parks such as Cape Breton Highlands, Waterton, Banff, Jasper, Yoho, Glacier, Mt. Robson, Kootenay, Strathcona, historic sites, Nova Scotia, nature, scenery, landscapes, seascapes, birds and many more. I've written magazine illustrating them with my own photos. I love photographing whatever appeals to me or happens to catch my eye. Almost all of my images are of Canada, though I probably specialize more on the Atlantic and Pacific Coasts and the western mountains. But you'll find an assortment from the whole country, including some from several years in the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions back in the 1950's and 60's. I hope some of you will get some enjoyment from my efforts. Constructive comments and suggestions are always welcome.

Amazing capture of this silhouette. Love the rich colors in the sky and use of light on the stump to lead us to the great bird. f/v

George, this is just one marvelous and creative piece of art work. I just love how you captured this, with the gorgeous sky, the mountains, the water, and the cormorant, with the highlighted stump, all makes for a masterful piece. Great job on this beauty, George! Thanks for sharing!
