Description
One of America's great streamliners, named "The City Of Miami", is seen in West Palm Beach, Florida, on a Monday, June 28, 1960. The train operated from Chicago to Jacksonville, and then along the eastern coast of Florida to it's destination in Miami, nearly 1,500 miles. From Chicago, the train utilized the rails of the Illinois Central ("good morning America how are you?") as far as Birmingham, AL., connecting there with a consortium of railroads including the Central of Georgia and Atlantic Coast Line before connecting with the Florida East Coast RR for the last leg from Jacksonville, FL., to Miami. It was a first-class train that included dome cars starting in 1959. It ran right up until the advent of Amtrak in 1971, and was dropped by the new passenger operator. In it's heyday it was one of a trifecta of "named" trains (i.e. first-class) that operated from Chicago to Miami, all on rails of different railroad companies. It's sisters were named "The South Wind" and "Dixie Flagler".
