Description
Whole and sectioned tangerines on dark wood with sun skimming across fresh fruit.
Citrus tachibana, the tachibana orange, is a species of the plant genus citrus.
As children we preferred tangerines to oranges because we could peel them outsells and they traveled so well in our lunch boxes and outing. We knew as soon as they showed up in our house the holidays would be close. Today the sweet smell when of a tangerine will bring back those fond memories. It is still a beloved snack in our house.
The name was first used for fruit coming from Tangier, Morocco, described as a mandarin variety. Under the Tanaka classification system, Citrus tangerina is considered a separate species. Under the Swingle system, tangerines are considered to be a group of mandarin (C. reticulata) varieties. While tangerines genetically resemble mandarins, the genetics are still not thoroughly studied. The term is currently applied to any reddish-orange mandarin[citation needed] (and, in some jurisdictions, mandarin-like hybrids, including some tangors, but the term "tangerine" may yet acquire a definite genetic meaning.
