Description
Stomach ulcer. Artwork of the Helicobacter pylori bacterium (blue) that is thought to contribute to the formation of stomach ulcers, with a stomach (pink) that has ulcers (round patches). The ulcers are on the internal stomach lining (brown), which is seen in this cutaway artwork. One ulcer is in the stomach, while another is in the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine where food exits the stomach. The oesophagus (upper left) is a tube that brings food from the mouth to the stomach. An ulcer is formed by the loss of inflamed and dying tissue. Stomach acid, alcohol and aspirin can all make the condition worse. Antibiotics are used if H. pylori bacteria are thought to be responsible.
