Description
Stomach ulcer. Endoscope view of a peptic ulcer in the stomach (centre). The stomach is responsible for chemically and mechanically breaking down food before passing it to the small intestine. A major causative factor of peptic ulcers (up to 60 per cent of stomach ulcers) is chronic inflammation due to the bacterium Helicobacter pylori. In this case, however, the cause was the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen and aspirin. Healing is promoted by drugs that block the secretion of gastric acid.
