Description
The Stockbridge Mission House, built by famed missionary Rev. John Sergeant c.1742, sits on Main Street in the quaint Berkshires community. Sergeant arrived in Stockbridge in the mid-1730s, recently graduated from Yale, at the invitation of the area's Mahican Native Americans. The home served as Sergeant's ministry base, as he soon gathered Native Americans and settlers into First Congregational Church of Stockbridge (c.1734). Sergeant and his wife mary diligently ministered in Stockbridge until John's death in 1649. The 39-year-old missionary left behind a wife and three young children. Sergeant was succeeded by famed First Great Awakening preacher Jonathan Edwards who served the mission and First Congregational until 1758, at which time Edwards accepted the presidency of Princeton University. The Mission House stands today as a reminder of Stockbridge's roots, offering a glimpse into early Puritan missions and Native American life in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts.
The Mission House is a registered National Historic Landmark.
