The diver in the center is wearing a diving dress. Not quite as pretty as the one you wore to prom, but far more effective. This suit is used to explore the deep sea. Despite the antique nature of this set up, its still used to day in things like sponge diving. The helmet protects the divers head and it provides both air and communications to up above. If the diver should fall unconscious, the helmet protects them as they drag them up. They still make this exact helmet even today.
The helmet is made from copper and brass typically, screwed together then soldered. The helmet alone weighs about 55 lbs, this doesn't include the suit, weighted belt or weighted shoes.
