Description
I could just say that this is St Patrick's Cathedral in Fort Worth TX but there's a story behind this picture. So, to make a short story long...I happened to be driving in downtown Fort worth one day and saw the sign saying St Patrick's Cathedral. I did a bit of a double take because in all the years we had lived in Fort Worth, I had no idea there was a Roman Catholic cathedral here. I always picured a 'cathedral' as a much larger building. So early one Saturday morning, I went back to take some pictures of the exterior. As I was reading the sign describing its historic significance, a car pulled up behind me on the street. I thought I was going to get yelled at for taking pictures but instead the people in the car encouraged me to go inside saying how beautiful it was! The sign I was reading was quite enticing so I did, quietly tiptoeing in. And I was entranced by the beauty which to me was thoroughly unexpected! There were alot of people at work cleaning the church, dusting, straightening, taking care of the candles, etc. I hadn't meant to take any pictures, not sure what the policy was. Instead one woman said it was quite fine to take pictures and even apologized to me that my pictures might be 'ruined' by the people who were cleaning! So we all quietly went about our work! Here is what the sign outside said that so interested me: "Erected in 1888-1892 under the direction of the parish priest, the Rev. Jean M. Guyot, a native of France. Stone for walls was quarried locally. Improvised, horse-powered lathes were used to turn and polish the eighteen interior pillars. Ceilings and window frames are wood grained. Stained glass windows were imported from Munich, Germany. Bell, cast in Troy, New York, has been in use since 1888. (Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 1962)." St. Patrick's was elevated to a co-cathedral in 1953 when Pope Pius XII changed the name of the Diocese of Dallas to the Diocese of Dallas-Fort Worth. Pope Paul VI divided the diocese and created the Diocese of Fort Worth on August 22, 1969. St. Patrick's was retained as the cathedral for the new diocese. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
