Description
Freehand sketch of a startled horse stirring up dust. Using graphite and graphite powder together for the first time to get the dusty effect. A study in foreshortening and accuracy.
Arabian horses tend to startle easily, but they also tend to be very responsive in the saddle. At least from my experience. You have to have a good seat or you'll find yourself on the ground.
Original image that I worked from came from a photograph taken by Wojtek, who is known for his Arabian horse photography.

Well Jani, I believe you've got the foreshortening and accuracy down pat on this! Boy, you can really feel the action and sense the startlement of the horse. Love the effect with the graphite and powder, all that dust stirred up adds so much to the action. Never thought I would be F/L a horse's rear end,but it's too good of a sketch not too!!

You have taken a most difficult stance and made it dance! Excellent work. V/F
Jani Freimann replied:
Thank you Anne. This is a difficult stance due to the foreshortening of the subject. :-)

Hey, Jani! I love the way you handle the graphite - pencil, dust, eraser work... Yum! Great horse's ass, and wonderful all around.
Jani Freimann replied:
Thank you, Eileen, for saying so. I'm particulary proud of how I drew this horses' hind end. :-)

Oh, yes, I noticed you did a version of this one too. Thank you for reminding me of this guy's name. I've been wanting to give him credit for the source. I did a total of three practice drawing from his photography. This is the only one that I posted. The other two looked to much like his photographs. So they remain just practice sketches not for sale. You can find his beautiful photography by Googling Wojtek horse photography.
