Description
Snowy egret (Egretta thula) in breeding plumage, morning light, Huntington Beach, California.
A familiar heron of the Americas, the snowy egret is well known for its spectacular mating displays, frantic foraging behaviors and beautiful all-white plumage, as in this photo. During the breeding season, it develops long, thin, wispy plumes along the neck, breast and back and a short, shaggy crest on the back of the head. At the peak of the breeding season, the conspicuous yellow feet and the bright yellow bare skin between the eyes and the bill become richer in color.
At one time, the beautiful plumes of the snowy egret were in great demand by market hunters as decorations for women's hats. This reduced the population of the species to dangerously low levels. Now protected in the U.S. by law, under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, the population has rebounded.
