Description
Here is another illustration for the story I wrote at age 12, Snow Tang. After being lost in a blinding blizzard, the girl and her rescued friend the fox are fighting for survival as night comes on. In a ravine she finds blocks of snow and makes them into a crude igloo up against a boulder. A dead, rotted cedar tree and the fire-starting kit of matches and tinder she always carries in her coat pocket will keep them warm inside the igloo. Meanwhile, Snow Tang's idea is to hunt for supper -- he has heard the rustling of a mouse or vole beneath the snow. I didn't create this illustration at age 12, perhaps because I thought it would give away too much of the story! But I feel the gap now and have supplied this digital painting. One of my earliest memories is of my older brother Thor teaching me how to build an igloo. Another is of a story my father told me when I was about 3 or 4 that taught me that, when lost, stay put. Find or make shelter and a fire. In all my hikes around the wilds I always carry fire-starting materials and some jerky or something. And this is not theoretical -- just last week a family was lost in the mountains under brutal January conditions. The father walked out for help, but by the time rescuers found the mother and son, she had died and the boy was badly frostbitten. So, while I wrote the story for fun, it has its serious purpose, too, in teaching kids about winter wilderness survival.
