Description
Slice of Life Musician Exotic Travel India Rajasthan 3a.
Meet Lakshman. He is a musician. Three times a week, he sits here in the dappled shade under the trees in the garden of Jaswant Thada, a royal cemetery, to entertain visitors with his melodious music, The folk musical instrument that Lakshman is playing is called Ravan Hatha or Ravanahatha. It is believed to have originated among the Hela civilization of Sri Lanka in the time of King Ravana. The bowl is made of a cut coconut shell that is covered with goat hide. A Dandi or pipe, made of bamboo, is attached to this shell. The two principle strings are made of steel and horsehair, respectively. The long bow has jingle bells.
Throughout the medieval history of India, the kings were patrons of music; this helped in increased popularity of ravanhatta among royal families. In Rajasthan and Gujarat, it was the first musical instrument to be learned by princes. The Sangit tradition of Rajasthan further helped in popularizing ravanhatta among ladies as well.
Lakshman is wearing the typical traditional colourful turban on his head. Also known as pagdi, pagari or pagdi. It is a long strip of cloth tied in a specific way according to the profession and social status of the wearer.
Jaswant Thada is an architectural landmark located in Jodhpur. It is a white marble memorial built by Maharaja Sardar Singh of Jodhpur State in 1899 in memory of his father, Maharaja Jaswant Singh II
The monument, in its entirety, is built out of intricately carved sheets of marble. These stones are extremely thin and polished so that they emit a warm glow when the sun's rays dance across their surface.
Within this cenotaph, there are also two more tombs. The Jaswant Thada is the traditional cremation ground of the rulers of Jodhpur in Rajasthan, India. The grounds also include exquisitely carved gazebos, a beautiful mulch-tiered garden, and a small lake.
Jaswant Thada is situated close to the Mehrangarh Fort complex. It is a 19th-century royal cenotaph built in commemoration of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, the 33rd Rathore ruler of Jodhpur. The son of Maharaja Jaswant Singh, Maharaja Sardar Singh, in the memory of his father, built the Jaswant Thada. The cenotaph has two more tombs within it. Close by, are the royal crematorium and three other cenotaphs.
Famous Jaswant Thada in Jodhpur, India is an example of architectural brilliance in India. It is a white marble memorial, built out of intricately carved sheets of marble. The carving shows the genius of the sculptors. There is also beautiful marble lattice work (locally k own as jaali work) on the cenotaph. There are some terrific views from the terrace in front of the cenotaph.
The cenotaph of Maharaja Jaswant Singh displays portraits of the rulers and Maharajas of Jodhpur. The main memorial has been built like a temple. To visit the Thada one has to go through the rocky hills. This also lends a mystic aura to the whole visit.
