Description
Skin cancer. Immunofluorescent light micrograph of squamous carcinoma cells, cultured from a tumour. This highly malignant cancer arises in epithelium typically of the skin. Cell nuclei are blue; cyto- plasm stains red & green (for keratin), colours changing to red as the cancer grows. Keratin is a fibrous skin protein. Squamous cell carcinoma may be caused by high exposure to sunlight. It is common in pale-skinned fair-haired people over age 60. Immunofluorescence is a technique which uses antibodies to attach fluorescent dyes to specific tissues and molecules within the cell. Magnification x187 at 35mm; x335 at 6x4.5cm size.
