Description
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), conceptual artwork. Inside the female (left) and male (right) symbols are several Chlamydia sp. bacteria. The spiral bacterium at upper left is Treponema pallidum, the cause of syphilis. The paired bacteria (for instance at lower right) are Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the cause of gonorrhoea. The cells with long extensions are Trichomonas sp. protozoa, the cause of trichomoniasis, or vaginitis. These diseases can all be spread by sexual contact. Their spread can be prevented by the use of barrier contraceptives such as condoms.
