Description
Scarred duodenal bulb. Endoscope view of deformation and scarring due to chronic peptic ulcer disease (PUD) in the duodenal bulb. The duodenum is the uppermost and shortest part of the small intestine, and is the main site of absorption for minerals. A major causative factor of peptic ulcers (up to 90 per cent of duodenal ulcers) is chronic inflammation due to the bacterium Helicobacter pylori. Another cause is the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen and aspirin.
