Description
"Sbiah Baah" is one of the most popular traditional festivals among the Maibrat People in Papua. This festival occurred in the '60s when I was a child. At that time, we were unfamiliar with modern technology such as cameras. Such festivals have gone along with the loss of our forefathers. But the characteristics of the cultural life are not lost. This has turned into the modern life of our generation. There are seven traditional institutions in Maybrat and Sawiat society:
1. WION - religion charge and the initiation institution of men
2. FENYA KIAR is an initiation institution for women
3. BOSI ANYA = Marriage institution
4. SIRA TABAM = Landlords institution
5. BOVEN = cultural institution
6. BOKAH MESIA BOSA MEYA = Economic and trade institutions
7. BOMEY = language institutions
Two of these seven institutions are connected to the Sbiah Baah festival: Marriage (Bosi Anya) and Trade (Bosa Meya). "Sbiah baah" is a home to control and settle debts and Receivers of Kain Timor (woven clothes from Timor Island used as dowry), originating from the stock (Mbrat: rural) planted by women. This is to equip and raise the dignity of their daughters after the male party accomplished the dowry provision (stock-rural). , give back down payment ( deposit = bomasu=pokok), dividend (bour- bunga), bonus ( bo amot), and grant ( bofnesaran = hibah). this formation system of spider webs has been taking place in Maybrat society until now, even in our new generation! As you see in this work, various kinds of colorful woven cloth are wrapped around the girls' bodies. Such wove clothes were made in Timor Island and used for years as dowry among the native people that inhabited the Birds Head peninsula of West Papua. The girls ran out of the house, chasing and holding the men's hands while dancing around that big house. Women with their traditional bag ( made of bark) full of Kain Timor inside it, walking in front of, followed by men shouting and running around about cutting the wood plugged by the host as if to prove and demonstrate their ability that they can pay their debt. Thanks to God, He has allowed me to record this historical event in my imagination. And I try to express it by painting on canvas. The philosophy of this festival has been described accurately in some books by local authors and even by some cultural experts from foreign countries such as the Dutch and the United States.
The same subject will be painted again from another perspective with a different style.
Bahasa Indonesia
1. WION - Lembaga agama dan inisiasi laki-laki
2. FENYA KIAR - merupakan lembaga inisiasi bagi perempuan
3. BOSI ANYA = Lembaga perkawinan
4. SIRA TABAM = Lembaga Pertanahan (tuan tanah)
5. BOVEN = lembaga kebudayaan
6. BOKAH MESIA BOSA MEYA = Lembaga perekonomian dan perdagangan
7. BOMEY = lembaga bahasa
