Sacromonte Abbey , located northeast of the city of Granada , autonomous community of Andalusia, Spain , is accessed either by the way of the Sacromonte , beginning in the flour weight located in the middle of the slope Chapiz or on the road to San Antonio starting from Haza Grande.
In 1595 was found on Mount Valparaiso (currently Sacromonte ) , relics of the disciples of St. James , 2 and lead plates written in Arabic, which told the martyrdom of San Cecilio , San Tesifón and San Hisicio , known as the lead books , as well as an oven and some ashes. The repercussion of this finding was enormous. The extraordinary ferment that followed led to the lifting of many crosses , about 1,200 raised by the guilds and craftsmen , of which only four remain today . Many of these crosses were donated to the Franciscans who , in 1633 , performed at the road connecting the city to Sacromonte an ordeal that ended in a small chapel dedicated to the Holy Sepulchre. The place became a center of pilgrimage.
In the early seventeenth century built an abbey that had great importance as cultural and religious complex and whose subsequent decay also caused the disappearance of the Sacromonte of which is preserved as the only witness , the cross erected by the Franciscans . Work commissioned by the Archbishop of Granada Pedro de Castro Cabeza de Vaca and Quiñones Jesuit brother and architect Pedro Sanchez, taking as reference the Escorial , and which failed to be completed , because after the death of the bishop , the funding was cut . In the library of the building are preserved drawings of the work. The courtyard is the highlight of the whole. All four sides have galleries with Tuscan columns that rest on semicircular arches and brackets molded in the key , in the spaces between the arches are roundels with the coat of Castro and stars of Solomon. On the top floor open layered rectangular openings between pilasters. If the lower body is of stone , the upper brick , offering a touch of color to the whole. In the center of the courtyard , which is boulder pavement , lies a great source .
The church is dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption . The initial project plan consisted of a single ship that ended the cruise. From the eighteenth century was enlarged , projecting a plant of Latin cross , with three naves and chancel , transept and choir. Inside, the nave appears to be covered with barrel vaults and lateral vaults . The rich decoration is another of his quirks. The choir , one of its most striking features , was conducted by Francisco Diaz del Rivero between 1615 and 1617 . The altarpiece of the chapel has been attributed to Blas Moreno. Among the sculptural manifestations also highlights the image of Cristo del Consuelo or Gypsies , conducted by José Laughing in 1695. In the main street lies the manifesting that houses the shrine and both sides sculptures of holy martyrs under the Achaeans kept his ashes . The cornice is broken by a large medallion with a relief of the Assumption . It ends with relief of the Trinidad and apostles. Cruise The side altars have the same structure : a single body and attic. Next to the altar, on the right, is the chapel of the founder. Small in size , contains his mausoleum , which appears on his knees and in prayer . To the left of the main altar in the sacristy we rectangular plan . It highlights table inlaid marble chalices and their frames and paintings of religious subjects alternating with oval mirrors . The main building, which was built between 1600 and 1610 , the latter year that Pedro de Castro Cabeza de Vaca and Quiñones , founded one of the first private schools in Europe ( as a private university where you studied law , theology and philosophy ) . This college became a secondary school only since the early twentieth century until 1975 , the year it closed . Today the Abbey is the residence of priests and is the parish church that celebrates Mass on Sundays at 12 am.
